Abstract
The current study aims to address the theme of women's political empowerment from an Islamic perspective within the framework of global human rights instruments and constitutions, with particular emphasis on the current Constitution of Iraq passed in 2005. While Islamic texts emphasize the principle of gender equality between the two sexes in rights and obligations, the challenges to women's political empowerment from the current socio-cultural environment prove to be an impediment to the effective political empowerment of women. Using an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of the theme through historical analysis and the use of analytical methods to examine the Quranic texts and prophetic traditions within the framework of global instruments such as the Universal Human Rights Convention passed in 1948, CEDAW passed in 1979, the Universal Charter of Human Rights passed in 2004 by the Arab League, the current study aims to prove that the Islamic texts are consistent with global instruments on the political empowerment of women. Further, the current study aims to prove that the political empowerment of women is not merely a desirable practice but an essential factor for the promotion of global human security.
